Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said Wednesday she will run for the House GOP conference chair now that the midterm elections are over.

Cheney was first elected in 2016 and was voted in for another two years in Tuesday's midterms. She is now campaigning to serve as the third-ranked person among House Republicans, according to The Washington Times.

"Although the 115th Congress has been one of the most productive in history, our message isn't breaking through," Cheney wrote to colleagues, according to the Times.

"Constantly playing defense in the battle of communications is a recipe for failure."

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., currently holds the title of House GOP conference chair.

Cheney is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Democrats gained control of the House Tuesday, although Republicans padded their majority in the Senate. The split setup will prove challenging for the White House as President Donald Trump undertakes the final two years of his first term in office.
