Gohmert: Ukraine Pits Community Organizer Against KGB Agent

The conflict between the United States and Russia over the fate of Crimea and Ukraine is a lopsided dispute that pits community organizer President Barack Obama against KGB agent Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Rep. Louie Gohmert.

"What you're seeing is what you get when a community organizer takes on a KGB agent. It doesn't go well," the Texas Republican told "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday.

Obama announced sanctions Monday against Russia that included freezing assets of several Russian officials. Both Democrat and Republic lawmakers have called for a tougher U.S. response to Russia's invasion of Crimea and the threat it poses to Ukraine.

Gohmert said an effective U.S. strategy to respond to Russian threats would be to "empower the enemy of your enemy [in order] to take on your enemy." He called for the United States to "immediately reinstate the ballistic missile defense in Poland, when this president screwed over our allies so badly."

Rather than just offer financial aid, the United States should also step up assistance to Ukraine by more direct means to halt further Russian aggression, Gohmert said. He said the United States should begin by bringing Ukraine and the Baltic states into NATO.

Gohmert said the United States could take aim at Russia's economy and "stop taking rubles for anything" and "kick them out of the international monetary fund." He suggested the United States also force Russia out of the G-8 alliance.
