The Supreme Court has set March 4 as the date to hear oral arguments in a critically important case over a Louisiana abortion law, CBS News reported Tuesday.
At issue is a Louisiana law requiring doctors carrying out abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital no more than 30 miles away, which would mean that all abortion clinics in the state would have to close.
Although Chief Justice John Roberts joined the liberal justices when the court ruled in February to prevent the law from taking effect while it faces a legal challenge, it is unclear whether Roberts will vote to block the law permanently, according to The Hill.
Roberts voted to uphold a similar law in Texas that was struck down 5-3 in 2016.
The Louisiana case, however, will be the first one concerning abortion to be heard by a Supreme Court that includes President Donald Trump nominees Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
"This case will have lasting consequences for abortion access across the country," Center for Reproductive Rights President and CEO Nancy Northup said in an email to CBS News. "Many states have been openly defying Supreme Court decisions in an effort to criminalize abortion. At this critical juncture, the court needs to set those states straight."
