A new ad by a Democratic-aligned group aimed at boosting Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin as he considers running for re-election in West Virginia emphasizes the effort the senator put forth to protect the pensions and health insurance of minors by working together with President Donald Trump during the previous administration, the Washington Examiner reported on Tuesday.
The West Virginia Senate race is expected to be one of the most competitive races of this election cycle, with Manchin as one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the Senate, as he would be running in a state that President Joe Biden lost by almost 40 percentage points in 2020.
"When miners' pensions were being chipped away, Joe Manchin protected our hard-earned benefits and worked with President Trump to protect over 100,000 miners' pensions,” says the voiceover of the six-figure ad campaign launched this week by Duty and Honor PAC, which is affiliated with Senate Democrats, and is being featured on multiple prominent digital platforms.
The ad also stresses that "when gridlock in Washington threatened to take away our healthcare, Sen. Manchin made sure nobody touched our benefits and helped secure health insurance for 22,000 miners. That's the West Virginia way. Tell Manchin to keep fighting for West Virginia.”
The No Labels group, which is planning to launch a third-party bid for the presidency if there is a rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden, is considering Manchin as a top contender to be its candidate.
For his part, Manchin has not yet announced if he will run for reelection to the Senate. If he decides not to, Democrats would lose their best chance of holding onto the seat in West Virginia.
