As Congress has not taken action to fix the nation's outdated asylum laws, it seems like a "logical move" to send migrants to the United States' sanctuary cities, Marc Lotter, the director of strategic communications for President Donald Trump's reelection campaign, said Monday.
"Ultimately the plan is for Congress to finally step up and do something to adjust the outdated asylum laws to deal with the immigration crisis the president has been talking about for years now," Lotter told CNN's "New Day."
Democrats have denied there was a crisis at the border until recently, added Lotter, and "we are under court order and federal law to release people into the country as opposed to letting them file for asylum where they live or where they come from. To release them and say we are welcoming, we'll bend over backward. It seems a logical move to send them there."
Asylum seekers must wait for years before their claims are heard, said Lotter, and meanwhile, "we are forced to house them in our country [and] give them work permits while they wait for the bogus claims to be adjudicated."
Lotter said he's not sure about any specific conversations the White House may have had with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, but there are not many other choices than to deal with the situation at the border.
"The president wants this stopped," said Lotter. "He's putting pressure on Mexico to stop caravans from coming across, talking about securing the border to keep people from coming over here and removing incentives that have them not only violate our laws but Mexico's laws just in order to get here. Until we do we have to deal with the situation at hand."
