Sen. Martha McSally, a veteran who had been stationed in Saudi Arabia at the time of the 9/11 attacks, said Monday Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's call for a "9/11-style commission" on border policies and her statements about eliminating the Department of Homeland Security are "uninformed and dangerous."
"They want to deny detention space and ICE beds, they don't want any barriers, no border wall," the Arizona Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They don't want to close the loopholes that are incentivizing this behavior. Essentially that's what's overwhelming and causing it to break."
McSally said Republicans are open to ideas being presented by Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats, and she called on them to stop this crazy dangerous rhetoric and the humanitarian crisis, which is really being exacerbated by their lack of action on this."
She also said she favors closing loopholes and fixing laws, but Democrats are refusing to come to the table to talk.
Meanwhile, McSally said current laws are incentivizing the trafficking of children and said she's working closely with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to close those loopholes and "stop the incentive for the dangerous journey."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Saturday he's open to working with Republicans on the border crisis, and President Donald Trump tweeted he's looking forward to speaking with Schumer, following the lawmaker's trip to the southern border.
