Maryanne Trump Barry is a senior judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and though she shuns the limelight of her brother Donald Trump, her views are not entirely different, especially when it comes to women.
The New York Times found a quote from a 1992 speech that Barry gave to a group of mostly female law enforcement officials regarding sexual harassment.
"Professional hypochondriacs" were making it hard for "men to be themselves," turning "every sexy joke of long ago, every flirtation," into sexual harassment, ruining "any kind of playfulness and banter," Barry said at the time.
She suggested women deal with boorish behavior with "humor and gentle sarcasm" or the "potent weapon" of a "feminine exterior and a will of steel."
Trump, who
came under fire recently for attacking Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly, told the Times his sister had just had a case before her court that had angered her when she made the statement.
"[S]he was very angry because a man was being sued by a woman for saying something to the equivalent of, 'Hi, honey, how ya doing,'" Trump said. "And she thought it was disgraceful" that "he said something that was a little bit cheeky" and his "life was ruined."
