More than 1,600 attorneys signed a letter demanding that special counsel Robert Mueller be protected from being fired by Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker.
According to The Hill, the American Constitution Society's letter said Mueller's Russia probe, which began in May 2017 over allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, be allowed to go on despite the change in leadership at the Department of Justice.
"The Special Counsel's investigations into Russian interference in our nation's democratic processes must be allowed to continue," the letter reads. "They must continue, even if they implicate persons or institutions connected to the President, to his campaign, or to his businesses."
The letter also called on Whitaker to either recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation or be removed from doing so, likely because of past statements he made that were critical of Mueller and his investigation.
The DOJ issued a legal opinion Wednesday that said President Donald Trump had the legal right to appoint Whitaker as temporary head of the department. Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions a week ago and promised to nominate a permanent replacement soon.
