Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Friday that President Donald Trump will likely nominate a new attorney general “quickly,” after Jeff Sessions’ firing, Bloomberg reports.
Trump named Sessions’ chief of staff MatthewWhitaker acting attorney general, prompting some criticism as to whether Trump had the power to appoint Whitaker without Senate confirmation. McConnell told reporters in Kentucky that although he doesn’t question whether Trump can replace Sessions, he did express doubt that Whitaker will remain in the position for long.
“I think this will be a very interim AG,” McConnell said. “I expect we’ll get a new nominee quickly for the job.”
He added that Trump said special counsel Robert Mueller, whose investigation into Russian election interference has been criticized by Whitaker, should be allowed to continue his work, and said “that also happens to be my view.”
