Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly will return to television in May joining NBC's Sunday evening programming, the New York Post's "Page Six" reported Monday in an exclusive story.
"She will start in May, and her Sunday show will premiere in June," a network insider told the Post.
Kelly's contract with Fox was set to expire in July, but Fox released her from the deal two weeks ago. She will join Kate Snow on Sunday evenings, premiere a weekly Sunday show in June and then host a weekday morning program that is due for a fall release.
Producers for Kelly's Sunday show will be NBC News vet and former "Dateline" executive producer David Corvo and longtime NBC producer Elizabeth Cole. NBC News chairman Andy Lack flew to Russia this month and met with a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading to speculation that an interview with the Russian president could launch Kelly's show.
Reports are mixed as to the status of what the platform will be for her weekday program, with one source stating flatly the network was still debating what kind of program Kelly would air and an NBC insider claiming things were progressing smoothly.
"It's a very real problem. There's no staff in place. They have no idea what they're going to do with Megyn. Ideas range from talk show to studio audience to news show. It's a problem," the source said. There was no comment from Kelly's rep.
"Megyn's morning show is almost entirely staffed — and it doesn't air for another five months. They just haven't announced anybody," the NBC source said.
NBC's focus of late has turned to ratings issues, as their popular morning talk show "Today," longtime leader in the ratings race, is facing challenges by both CBS and ABC. Yet, an NBC executive insisted that the network's "competitive advantages have reached five-year highs" among morning TV viewers.
