The Meta Oversight Board this week released a report criticizing the company's "failure to remove" content denying the facts of the Holocaust on its social media networks.
The board, an independent entity established in 2020 to oversee Meta's moderation practices on Facebook and Instagram, released a report on Tuesday criticizing Meta for not doing enough to combat antisemitism on its platforms.
In their report, the board notes that an Instagram post of the SpongeBob SquarePants character Squidward with a speech bubble showing false claims under the title "Fun Facts About The Holocaust." The board notes that this post remained up for several days despite multiple users reporting it for hate speech. Meta's Hate Speech Community Standards lists "Holocaust denial" as prohibited.
"The board is concerned about Meta's failure to remove this content and has questions about the effectiveness of the company's enforcement," the board wrote.
"While the assessment showed a marked decline since October 2020 in content using terms like 'Holohoax,' it found that there are gaps in Meta's removal of Holocaust denial content," the board continued.
"The assessment showed that content denying the Holocaust can still be found on Meta's platforms, potentially because some users try to evade enforcement in alternative ways, such as by replacing vowels in words with symbols, or creating implicit narratives about Holocaust denial using memes and cartoons."
