The lawyer for a woman who claimed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh got teenage girls drunk for the purpose of having them be gang raped more than 30 years ago said he welcomes an investigation over claims the statements he and his client made were false.
Michael Avenatti tweeted this Thursday evening:
".@ChuckGrassley — let's start the investigation tonight. I will make my client available for a sworn interview and you can make Judge Kavanaugh available for a sworn interview. We also have 9 other witnesses we want interviewed and specific documents we want requested. Let's go."
Avenatti gained notoriety for representing Stormy Daniels, the porn star who said she had a brief affair with President Donald Trump several years ago.
In recent months, Avenatti began working with Julie Swetnick, who told wild stories about Kavanaugh during his confirmation process. No supporting evidence was made public. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley announced Thursday he asked the Justice Department to investigate whether Swetnick and Avenatti made false claims about Kavanaugh.
"When charlatans make false claims to the committee — claims that may earn them short-term media exposure and financial gain, but which hinder the committee's ability to its job — then there should be consequences," Grassley said.
