In an appearance Monday on CBN's "The 700 Club," author Michael Reagan shared the most inspiring lessons taught to him by his father, former President Ronald Reagan.
When Michael was a child his father would pick him up to take him to the ranch and "would tell story after story telling me about the greatness of America," he told CBN.
Reagan writes about his father's lessons in his newest book, "
Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan."
Michael Reagan told CBN many of the lessons seemed to make no sense at the time, but as he has grown to adulthood, he has come to see his father had a plan all along.
Ground squirrel hunting, for instance, taught him patience as he waited for the animals to pop out of their holes in the ground. Working on the ranch and even swimming were part of the teaching, he said.
"All of these things were lessons in life," Reagan said.
Ronald Reagan lived the Lord's Prayer, he said, teaching the power of forgiveness when he forgave his attempted assassin, John Hinkley, Jr. That forgiveness helped the president bond with Pope John Paul II, who also had forgiven the man who tried to kill him. The bond between Reagan and John Paul led to the fall of communism, he said.
Reagan's lessons focused on life, love, family, faith, success, and leadership, Michael Reagan says in the book.
