Huckabee: GOP Should Maintain Opposition to Abortion

By    |   Thursday, 13 March 2014 07:06 AM EDT

The Republican Party should maintain its opposition to abortion, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Wednesday.

"I did not become pro-life because I got into politics. I got into politics because as a pro-life person I believe if we get this issue wrong we will get all the other issues wrong,"  Huckabee said at the Susan B. Anthony List dinner in Washington, The Hill reported.

"This is not an issue that we should abandon," said Huckabee, who is weighing a possible 2016 race for the GOP presidential nomination. "I have a moral obligation before God, and a political obligation unto the Declaration of Independence and our constitutional form of government, to believe that that life is a life worth living and a life worth protecting."

He went on to say, "We can run the full gambit of what we believe, we don't have to reduce down to one flavor. That's not how we lose an election. That's how we win elections and it's how we save this republic."

The former Baptist preacher and 2008 presidential candidate has been highlighting his social agenda in contrast to some other possible Republican contenders, according to The Hill. He urged GOP members of Congress to place opposition to abortion squarely on the national Republican agenda, Politico reported.

Among others speakers at the group's two-day gathering were Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz who said that abortion supporters intoned "Hail, Satan" in their efforts to silence pro-life forces, The Associated Press reported. Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee characterized support for abortion as "savagery" and as the embrace of a "culture of death."

Nebraska GOP Sen. Deb Fischer told the activists that "Abortion is not a women's issue. It is not a men's issue. It is not a healthcare issue. It is a violence issue," according to the AP.

The Susan B. Anthony List aims to elect women to Congress who oppose abortion, Politico reported. The dinner gala was hosted by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol.
