Former Arkansas governor and current Fox News host Mike Huckabee for the third time this week has blasted Democrats for insultingly making women believe they’re “helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing … birth control because they cannot control their libido or reproductive system” without a government handout.
Huckabee, speaking at the Republican National Committee’s convention lunch Thursday, made the remarks during a critique of Democratic rhetoric about the GOP’s “War on Women,” asserting Republicans instead “have a war for women, to empower them to be something other than victims of their gender,”
the Washington Post reported.
Huckabee made similar comments Monday on
"The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
“Our party stands for the recognition of the equality of women and the capacity of women,” Huckabee told the RNC gathering, according to a transcript of the remarks by
Slate.com.
“That's not a war on them; it's a war for them. And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it, let's have that discussion all across America, because women are far more than Democrats have made them to be.”
Huckabee also praised RNC chairman Reince Priebus for making time during the party’s annual meeting so members could attend the annual March for Life Wednesday,
Time reported.
While admitting he hadn’t seen reports of Huckabee’s speech, White House press secretary Jay Carney immediately branded them as “offensive,”
Mediaite reported.
“…[W]hoever said it, it sounds offensive to me, and to women,” he told reporters.
Huckabee -- who made a White House bid in 2008 and has said he’s considering another shot in 2016 -- made the same argument on his
Sunday Fox News show to describe what he believes is the Democrats’ patronizing attitude toward women.
“The ridiculous claim that a pro-life position is a ‘war on women’ is an insult to the millions of women who make extraordinary sacrifices for their children,” he said on the Jan. 19 show.
“For Democrats to reduce women to beggars for cheap government funded birth control is demeaning to the women that I know who are far more complicated than their libido and the management of their reproductive system. Women I know also have brains and they use them creatively and effectively and they can manage everything from a business to a household.”
