Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Sunday said that if an unborn child is truly a person, then abortion is violating that person of his or her constitutional rights.
Huckabee briefly mentioned the Fifth and 14th amendments to the U.S. Constitution during the Thursday night GOP presidential debate. On Sunday, ABC's
"This Week" host George Stephanopoulos asked him about a recent report that he had not ruled out using the FBI and the military to stop abortion.
Huckabee attributed that quote to a Rolling Stone reporter, and said what he means is that unborn children should be given due process under the Fifth Amendment before being deprived of life and liberty and that under the 14th that there is equal protection under the law.
"How that plays out is one of the ways we discover," he said. "What does it take for Americans to wake up to the fact that we're violating the constitutional rights of human beings?"
Americans are not acting like a civilized people in allowing abortion to continue, he said.
He was critical of politicians who say they personally oppose abortion but want to keep it safe, legal and rare.
"It's not safe. I don't think it's legal. I think it violates the Fifth and 14th amendments, He said. "And it's not rare. It happens 4,000 times a day."
