Nothing about former Donald Trump attorney Michael Cohen's plea of guilty of lying to Congress should mean that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation must last much longer, Sen. Mike Lee said Thursday.

"I don't think it changes anything about how I look at the probes," the Utah Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom," adding that it also doesn't change his opposition to a bill to protect the Mueller investigation.

"I don't think anything about this latest development also necessarily indicates that the Mueller probe has to last much longer ... I think he should be nearing the end of his investigation. I look forward to seeing his report and I hope he is to wrap it up."

Earlier on Thursday and on Wednesday night, Trump lambasted the ongoing probe through Twitter, but Lee said he doesn't think the president saw the Cohen plea coming.

Meanwhile, the development occurs as Trump is heading to meet with world leaders for the upcoming G-20 summit, but Lee said he is instead looking forward to hearing from him on matters of trade or criminal justice reform.
