Vice President Mike Pence is set to attend the kickoff event next week in key swing state Florida for "Latinos for Trump," a campaign effort to rally Latino voters for the 2020 election, The Hill reported.
Tuesday's event will take place at a Miami hotel a day before the first of two Democratic debates are held in the same city. The Trump campaign said "Latinos for Trump" will be a nationwide project.
"The strong Latino support for President [Donald] Trump and his policies will be instrumental in re-electing the president for a second term," Hannah Castillo, director of coalitions for the Trump campaign, said in a statement, The Hill reported.
The president is appealing to Hispanic voters by emphasizing the low unemployment rates among minority communities and his support for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó over embattled President Nicolás Maduro, The Hill noted.
But he has also drawn criticism for comments and policies toward Latinos dating back to his campaign launch in 2015.
In an interview with Telemundo set to air Thursday night, Trump said Latino voters supported his rhetoric and threats to deport scores of immigrants in the country illegally, The Hill reported.
