VP Pence Heads to Pentagon to Help Start Space Force

Vice President Mike Pence heads to the Pentagon on Thursday to talk about the future of the U.S. military in space — including establishing President Donald Trump's proposed Space Force, CNN reported Tuesday.

According to CNN, which cited two unnamed sources, the visit is expected to coincide with the Department of Defense's report to Congress on the recommended organization and management of a space component in the military.

That report is not expected to call for a separate Space Force military branch, which would require action by Congress, CNN reported.

The news comes as Secretary of Defense James Mattis told reporters the Pentagon was still "working our way through this," Defense News reported.

Mattis said he "absolutely" supported a Space Force command and such an elevation was "certainly one thing that we can establish," the military news outlet reported.

He added the department was also "in complete agreement" with Trump and his concern for space, calling Pence "the point man" on this issue, Defense News reported.
