The United States' trade team is working during talks with China this week to enforce agreements on intellectual property protection, forced technology transfer, and more with China, but the Asian nation's behavior is "aggressive along every dimension of international power," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday.
"It's one thing to write something on a piece of paper, but it's another thing to have enforcement mechanisms," Pompeo told Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria" anchor Maria Bartiromo. "The heart of these discussions will surround enforcement mechanisms and I hope that the Chinese will be prepared to permit those to take place. If they do, perhaps we can find a good, solid way to move forward."
In addition to China's military expansion, China is engaging in "predatory economic practices" while trying to influence other nations, said Pompeo, noting that the United States has been making sure other countries understand the risk of putting telecommunications giant Huawei's technology, which was designed by the Chinese government and military, into their technology systems.
He warned the United States will not be able to share information with countries that use Huawei technology in their critical information systems.
"In some cases, there's a risk we won't be able to co-locate American resources, American embassy, American military outposts," said Pompeo.
Huawei offers inexpensive deals to many countries, but that is a risk, said Pompeo.
"The truth is, to keep your people safe isn't always cheap," said Pompeo. "Sometimes it costs money. Sometimes you have to buy a better product, higher quality product, a product that has more security embedded in it."
