Report: HS Touts 'Modesty Ponchos' If Prom Dresses Too Revealing

Female students at a high school in Detroit will receive a "modesty poncho" if their prom dresses are too revealing, Fox affiliate WJBK reports.

The poncho, which is pink, has been on display at Divine Child High School with the following note: "If your dress does not meet our Formal Dance Dress Requirements — no problem! We've got you covered — literally. This is our Modesty Poncho, which you'll be given at the door."

"We are trying to focus on the inner beauty and not draw attention to something that doesn't need attention drawn to it," theology teacher Mary Pat O'Malley told WJBK. "It was really intended as a deterrent and a lighthearted one at that."

The school's prom is set for Saturday, May 12.

One student told the TV station the school had gone too far.

"As we walk into prom, we are to shake hands with all the teachers, and if you walk through and a teacher deems your dress is inappropriate, you will be given a poncho at the door," she said. "Who knows what will happen to those who try and speak out against it."

A letter later sent out to parents from school officials said the ponchos were on display but would not be passed out. WJBK, though, reports some students had already received them.
