The leading U.S. Navy SEAL issued a letter, dated July 25, to commanders telling them, “we have a problem” with misbehavior after several high-profile incidents, CNN reports.
Rear Adm. Collin Green, the commander of Naval Special Warfare Command, set an Aug. 7 deadline for commanders to report on the problems they’ve noticed and their recommendations for making sure that troops behave appropriately.
"I don't know yet if we have a culture problem, I do know that we have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately," Green said. He adds that "some of our subordinate formations have failed to maintain good order and discipline and as a result and for good reason,” the Navy’s special operations forces’ culture “is being questioned.”
Although Green doesn’t name any specific incidents, recent reports state that an entire SEAL team was sent home from Iraq for drinking during their deployment, and one team member was accused of sexual assault.
“The Commander lost confidence in the team’s ability to accomplish the mission,” U.S. Special Operations Command said in a statement Wednesday night, according to The Washington Post. “Commanders have worked to mitigate the operational impact as this SEAL platoon follows a deliberate redeployment.”
A separate investigation found that members of SEAL Team 10 allegedly used cocaine and other illegal substances last year, while stationed in Virginia.
"There is a cultural and ethics issue in the SEAL community," an unnamed senior Navy official told CNN. "Senior Navy leaders are keenly interested in how this problem is going to be addressed."
