A longtime NBC News employee has died after contracting the coronavirus, the network's chairman announced in a memo to staff on Friday.

Larry Edgeworth, 61, was a technician who worked in the equipment room at the network's headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. His wife, Crystal, said he had underlying health issues.

"As we have heard from medical professionals, those with underlying health concerns are sadly the most vulnerable," NBC Chairman Andy Lack wrote in the Friday memo.

"Many of you were fortunate enough to work with Larry over the years, so you know that he was the guy you wanted by your side no matter where you were," Lack continued.

MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle showed pictures of Edgeworth while informing viewers of his death on Friday. "Larry, he's the big guy you see right there on the left during a shoot in Namibia back in 2011. He spent most of his 25 years at NBC News as a skilled audio technician, traveling the world to bring you, our beloved viewers, the news. Many of us here were fortunate to work with him."

"Today" co-anchor Savannah Guthrie added on Instagram: "I adored Larry. We traveled together for two straight months on a campaign in 2008 and he was always the most warm, most professional, most loving. All hours of the day and night, no matter how hungry or tired or stressed we were — he was always a joy."
