The family of astronaut Neil Armstrong was paid $6 million by an Ohio hospital as part of a wrongful death settlement, according to The New York Times.
Mercy Health reportedly paid the secret settlement in 2014, which was two years after Armstrong’s death.
Armstrong’s wife did not receive any money in the settlement.
Instead, according to documents filed with the Hamilton County Probate Court in Cincinnati which were publicly available on Tuesday, the money went to 10 family members - including his two sons, sister, brother and six grandchildren, The Chicago Tribune reported.
Although at the time of his death the Armstrong family said it was due to complications from coronary bypass surgery, The New York Times reported that his sons attributed his death to incompetent post-surgical care at Mercy and threatened legal action.
The hospital defended its actions and the care that Armstrong received, but decided to pay out the settlement in order to avoid a legal battle.
In a statement to CNN, Mercy Hospital declined to discuss the case but said they were disappointed that the issue had been made public.
"The public nature of these details is very disappointing - both for our ministry and the patient's family who had wished to keep this legal matter private," the statement said.
The revelation of the settlement came just a few days after the nation commemorated the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing and Armstrong’s first steps on the moon.
