In what could only be called an upset, Democrat Xochiti Torres Small was declared the winner in New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District (Albuquerque-Roswell-Las Cruces) last Wednesday by a margin of roughly 3,500 votes.

But, State Rep. Yvette Herrell said Monday there was no way she was conceding defeat. The conservative Republican and stalwart Christian, long considered the natural successor to outgoing Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., told reporters "this is about voter integrity . . . we have over 100 documented complaints about some of the things that happened during the election."

If there are problems in the voting, she said, "Let's fix them."

Herrell's problem is, in contrast to other undecided House races, there are no outstanding votes to count in New Mexico's 2nd District. Herrell had led most of the evening, but Wednesday, an estimated 8,000 absentee ballots were counted that put Small, an attorney and former aide to Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., over the top.
