New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo took aim at President Donald Trump in his victory speech Tuesday night, fueling further speculation that one of the president’s biggest critics will run in 2020.
"I am humbled by the support of New Yorkers. I’m gratified by their trust. I will work every day to vindicate the confidence the people have put in me," Cuomo said after securing a third term in office.
Cuomo bested Republican challenger Marc Molinaro, 59 percent to 36.8 percent, as well as third-party candidates Larry Sharpe, Howie Hawkins and Stephanie Miner. He cast the results as vindication of his vision for the state.
"We understand in New York that being progressive isn’t a label or a symbol but means getting the job done," Cuomo said.
"New York is not buying what President Trump is selling. We know his type too well," he added.
Cuomo has insisted he’s focused on his job as governor, and in September pledged to serve four full years if elected, saying the “only caveat is if God strikes me dead.”
Trump and Cuomo have sparred publicly for some time, and the governor during his campaign said part of his job was to “fight Donald Trump, who is the main risk to the state of New York.”
