New York Times Backtracks on Gaza Hospital Reporting

By    |   Monday, 23 October 2023 11:49 AM EDT

The New York Times has issued a statement about its reporting on the explosion at a hospital in Gaza City last week, saying that it previously "relied too heavily on claims by Hamas."

In a statement on Monday, the Times said that during its early coverage of the incident, which Israel has blamed on a Palestinian group and Hamas has blamed on Israel, the newspaper "relied too heavily on claims by Hamas, and did not make clear that those claims could not immediately be verified," which "left readers with an incorrect impression about what was known and how credible the account was."

The newspaper also admitted, "Times editors should have taken more care with the initial presentation, and been more explicit about what information could be verified."

President Joe Biden last week, after visiting Israel, told reporters that "the data I was shown by my Defense Department" supports Israel's explanation that the rocket was fired by the group Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which has denied being behind the explosion.
