More people from New York moved to Florida in 2022 than any year in history, according to the New York Post.
The newspaper, attributing its information to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, said 64,577 New Yorkers took out Florida drivers' licenses last year.
The number eclipsed the 61,728 New Yorkers, who moved to Florida in 2021, the newspaper said. And it marked a 39% increase over 2019, the last pre-pandemic year.
A worker at the Jacksonville, Florida DMV office said the transplanted New Yorkers often complain about the Empire State's high taxes and the quality of life there.
"They come in every day," the staffer told the Post. "I hear all the complaints. I feel like a therapist sometimes," she said.
"It's slowed down a little bit," the worker said of the stampede for licenses. "But not by a whole lot, I can tell you that."
A 2022 report by the real estate brokerage firm Redfin showed that the most common cities that people moving to Florida are coming from are Chicago and New York.
The firm indicated that Miami and Tampa, both cities in Florida, saw the highest net inflow of homebuyers in the second quarter of 2022. Cities that follow are Phoenix, Sacramento, and Las Vegas.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida saw the country's largest net domestic migration between July 2020 and July 2021, with more than 220,000 people moving there.
Texas and Arizona followed, while New York, California, and Illinois were the top states that saw residents leave.
