The Obama Foundation has selected renowned husband-and-wife architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien to design the $500 million Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

"They stood out in their commitment to explore the best ways of creating an innovative center for action that inspires communities and individuals to take on our biggest challenges," the foundation said.

Williams and Tsein, who are based in New York City and will partner with Chicago firm of Interactive Design Architects to build the complex, said in a joint statement:

"It is a joy, an honor, and a responsibility to create a place that reflects the optimism and integrity of the President and the First Lady."

Other well-known projects designed by Williams and Tsein include: the Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago; the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park, Brooklyn; the Whitney Museum of American Art Downtown Branch in Manhattan; and First Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington, D.C.
