Former President Barack Obama on Wednesday praised Americans for electing leaders that reflect the growing diversity of the nation, the Washington Examiner reported.
“The more Americans who vote, the more our elected leaders look like America,” Obama said.
The former president said that the Democrats winning the House of Representatives was crucial, but stressed that “even more important than what we won is how we won: by competing in places we haven’t been competitive in a long time, and by electing record numbers of women and young veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, a surge of minority candidates, and a host of outstanding young leaders.”
Although Obama acknowledged that some of the younger candidates did not win, he insisted that they “infused new energy and new blood into our democratic process, and America will be better off for it for a long time to come.”
Obama expressed optimism that the country will “return to ... honesty, decency, compromise, and standing up for one another,” but cautioned that the fight is not over, emphasizing that “the change we need won’t come from one election alone, but it is a start,” according to The Hill.
Obama added that he and former first lady Michelle “couldn’t be prouder” of those who served in his administration who won on Election Day.
