President Barack Obama urged the media and American public Friday to examine the "long record" of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and not get distracted by the "spectacle and the circus" aspect of the 2016 campaign.

"It's important for us to take seriously the statements he's made in the past," Obama told reporters. "I just want to emphasize the degree to which we are in serious times and this is a really serious job.

"This is not entertainment. This is not a reality show."
