Poll: Conservatives Winning Support to Defund Obamacare

By    |   Sunday, 15 September 2013 08:07 AM EDT

Conservatives are winning the war to defund Obamacare with a significant number of Americans now opposing the president's signature legislation, according to a recent CNN poll.

With more than 1,000 surveyed, 57 percent say they oppose the new law while 39 percent are still backing the program.

The numbers show a decline in support of the healthcare system restructuring;a Rasmussen poll last month reported 52 percent of respondents opposed it while 41 percent favored Obamacare.

The Hill reports that the drop in support for the measure shows conservatives are winning the battle to defund the president's contentious law, but defunding could come at the cost of a temporary government shutdown.

Specifically, the poll found support for the healthcare law waning throughout President Barack Obama's key constituencies – women and those making less than $50,000 a year.

Dan Holler, communications director for Heritage Action, told the newspaper the new poll shows conservatives have the momentum to defund the program.

"Folks outside of Washington are clamoring for this," Holler said.

Congress faces an Oct. 1 deadline to continue funding of all government agencies, but many tea party Republicans want to strip the measure of the tax dollars needed to begin the new system in January.

Democrats including Obama have threatened to reject funding for all agencies, resulting in that in a government shutdown, unless money for Obamacare is included.
