White House Denies GOP's Low Obamacare Paid-Premium Numbers

Thursday, 01 May 2014 03:59 PM EDT

White House press secretary Jay Carney on Thursday has dismissed claims by House Republicans that only 67 percent of Obamacare enrollees who signed up on HealthCare.gov have paid their premiums, according to the Washington Times.

"We dispute their numbers," said Carney, while claiming the GOP's report "isn't on the level."

However, he was unable to say how many people have paid their premiums or provide information to verify his denial, the Times said. "We are assembling it, working with issuers," he said. "We're not going to put out partial information."

The House Energy and Commerce Committee said data showed two-thirds of those with healthcare plans obtained through the federal marketplace HealthCare.gov — about 2.45 million Americans — had completed the sign-up process and had paid their premium by the end of the first enrollment period on April 15.

A total of 3.65 million Americans had obtained coverage through HealthCare.gov by April 15, the figures show.

Carney called the report just another GOP partisan attack on Obamacare, saying "they're upset" because the law is working. He claimed that insurance executives have reported between 80 and 90 percent of enrollees have paid their premiums.
