Special counsel Robert Mueller on Tuesday responded to a letter from President Donald Trump's attorneys regarding the scope and format of a potential interview, and still wants to ask Trump about obstruction of justice and other topics, according to sources who spoke with ABC News.
Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, speaking to reporters in New Hampshire following an appearance at a Republican congressional campaign event, confirmed receiving the letter and said, "now we're in the process of responding to their proposal."
"I'm not going to give you a lot of hope it's going to happen," Giuliani said of a potential Trump sit-down, "but we're still negotiating."
According to Fox News, Mueller has agreed to cut the number of questions for the president to answer to 49, and wants to ask questions both orally and written for Trump to respond to.
Giuliani on Sunday said Trump's team wants an interview basically limited to questions involving alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 election, arguing no "legal basis" exists for the president to be questioned about obstruction.
But Giuliani also said Trump might be willing to address obstruction in some form.
Trump early Wednesday blasted Mueller's Russia investigation, demanding Attorney General Jeff Sessions "stop this rigged witch hunt right now."
Mueller is looking to wrap up his investigation before the end of the summer, but factors that determine his end date include the still pending decision on Trump testifying.
