The mother of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. moved to Florida from New York to escape the state’s high real estate taxes, the Daily Mail reports.
Blanca Ocasio-Cortez moved into an $87,000, 860-square foot home in Eustis, Florida – north of Orlando – in late 2016.
“I was paying $10,000 a year in real estate taxes up north,” she said. “I'm paying $600 a year in Florida. It's stress-free down here.”
And she added: “After the children graduated from college, I figured it was time for me to move to Florida.”
She picked Eustis because a relative lived there, the newspaper noted.
The Mail said the neighborhood is not one with manicured lawns and sculpted hedges. And it noted drug deals occasionally take place outside another home on the street.
But Ocasio-Cortez said she is comfortable there.
“My house was crumbling and the yard was in disarray,' she said. “But I've been working on it since I moved in. I painted outside and inside then started improving everything else.'
Following her daughter’s primary victory last year, she had told the New York Post that her daughter has her eyes set on the White House.
"Her aspiration is to be the president," she said.
