A new political action committee hopes to draft Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, to run for president in 2020, CNN is reporting.
Draft Beto 2020 is co-chaired by New England-based Democratic strategists Lauren Pardi, Will Herberich and Adam Webster, according to the news network. O’Rourke is not involved with the group.
“We believe the candidate best-suited to run such a campaign - and win back the White House - is Beto O’Rourke,” the organizers say on their website. “Beto hasn’t decided whether he’s running for president. However, we believe so strongly in Beto’s potential candidacy that we think it’s critical to start organizing now.”
The group is planning a digital push on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter in hopes of convincing O’Rourke to enter the race, CNN reported. Draft Beto 2020 plans to file with the Federal Elections Commission before the end of the year.
O’Rourke has not ruled out running in 2020, despite his failed attempt to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas in the midterms.
"Amy and I made a decision not to rule anything out," O'Rourke said, referring to his wife.
