Sheriffs' Organizations Back Bondi for AG

By    |   Tuesday, 14 January 2025 01:42 PM EST

Two major national sheriffs' organizations support former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi's nomination to become the next U.S. attorney general.

The National Sheriffs' Association and the Major County Sheriffs of America, in communications with Senate leaders, argued that Bondi's experience and leadership are needed to bring change to the Department of Justice, the Daily Caller reported Tuesday.

Bondi is President-elect Donald Trump's second nominee for attorney general after former Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration.

In a letter dated Monday to Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the National Sheriffs' Association, representing 3,081 elected sheriffs, said Bondi would bring a "proactive approach in prosecuting federal crimes," making her a welcome change in the law enforcement community.

"If confirmed, Ms. Bondi has pledged to prioritize the needs of law enforcement by fostering a culture of collaboration and direct engagement," the National Sheriffs' Association wrote.

"Her recognition of the importance of local perspectives and her willingness to work alongside rank-and-file officers, as well as leadership, are essential to overcoming the pressing challenges we face. Her ability to restore trust and accountability within the Department of Justice will be instrumental in protecting our communities and upholding the principles of justice."

The Major County Sheriffs of America, representing sheriffs across 30 states, wrote last week to Grassley, Durbin, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that Bondi's work to combat the opioid crisis" and her "leadership in fighting human trafficking" make her the right pick as attorney general.

"As Florida's Attorney General for two terms, she earned a reputation as one of the most effective state attorneys general in the country," the organization said. "Her steadfast dedication to upholding the law, safeguarding citizens, and advancing justice is reflected in numerous impactful public safety initiatives."

The endorsements reflect growing support in the law enforcement community for Bondi. The Fraternal Order of Police, the nation's largest police organization, has endorsed her, as have several former DOJ officials and state attorneys general.

"Law enforcement groups across America are endorsing Pam Bondi because she has been a champion for law and order throughout her career as a prosecutor and Florida's attorney general. If confirmed, she will support law enforcement officers and return the Department of Justice to its core mission of fighting crime and keeping Americans safe," Trump-Vance transition spokesperson Gates McGavick said.

Bondi's confirmation hearings are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
