NAACP: DOJ Pick Bondi 'Undermined' Voting Rights

By    |   Thursday, 16 January 2025 02:15 PM EST

In a report published Thursday, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) claimed that Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi has a history of "undermining" voting rights.

The report titled "LDF Report in Opposition to the Nomination of Pamela Jo Bondi for Attorney General" alleges Bondi's work as Florida AG and as chair of the America First Policy Institute (AFPI) make her "unfit" for the office.

"Ms. Bondi has a record of limiting voting rights, baselessly undermining faith in U.S. elections, and encouraging politically motivated prosecutions as an act of vengeance," the report read.

"By contrast, DOJ has historically played a vital role in protecting the right to vote, a function that has become even more important in a post-Shelby County v. Holder era in which there has been a widespread effort across the country, particularly in the South, to limit the voting rights of Black communities and other communities of color. DOJ has also been central to the federal government's efforts to ensure free and fair elections and to the upholding the principle of equal justice under law."

The report argued that Bondi has a history of challenging voting rights when the AFPI, under her leadership, filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration when it claimed it was protecting ballot access for Black voters, voters of color and other eligible voters who received any language assistance needed to cast a ballot."

By contrast, the AFPI's lawsuit alleged the Biden administration was attempting to "turn federal agencies into partisan voter registration machines."

The NAACP's report also questioned Bondi's impartiality, noting that she had been a former personal lawyer for President-elect Donald Trump. The report cited Bondi's work with AFPI has further evidence she worked to undermine voting rights and went on to claim that she "attempted to undermine the integrity of U.S. elections by supporting President-Elect Trump's baseless claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen."

During her Senate confirmation hearings Wednesday, Bondi was asked by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., if she acknowledged President Joe Biden was elected, to which she answered, "President Biden is the president of the United States. He was duly sworn in, and he is the president of the United States. There was a peaceful transition of power. President Trump left office and was overwhelmingly elected in 2024."
