President Donald Trump Thursday expressed condolences to France in light of the shooting on the Champs-Elysees that killed one police officer and wounded another — before the attacker himself was killed — saying that "it looks like another terrorist attack."

"Again, it is happening, it seems," Trump said at a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at the White House. "That's a terrible thing.

"It is a very, very terrible thing that's going on in the world."

French authorities said that a gunman killed a police officer and wounded another before being killed himself in an attack on the Champs-Elysees shopping district.

The attacker targeted police guarding the area near the Franklin Roosevelt subway station Thursday night at the center of the avenue popular with tourists, police said.

The attack comes three days before the first round of balloting in France's tense presidential election.

Security is high preceding the vote after police said they arrested two men Tuesday in what they described as a thwarted terror attack.

"What can you say?" Trump asked regarding the shooting. "Just never ends.

"We have to be strong — and we have to be vigilant," he added. "I have been saying it for a long time."
