Dr. Anthony Fauci, reacting to a threatened probe of him by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said "go ahead" and investigate.
Fauci, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, made his comments on Tuesday during an interview on CNN's "New Day" program.
Fauci maintained there is no reason for an investigation.
"But if they want to, go ahead," he said. "My records are an open book. They are talking about things that are really bizarre — like crimes against democracy by shutting down the government.
"All I have ever done — and go back and look at everything I have done — was to recommend common sense, good CDC-recommended public health policies that have saved millions of lives. If you want to investigate me for that, go ahead."
Paul is vowing to investigate Fauci if Republicans take control of the Senate as a result of the upcoming midterms.
"One way or another, if we are in the majority, we will subpoena his records and he will testify in the Senate under oath," Paul said according to The Hill.
The Fauci investigation is just one in a series of investigations Republicans are planning if the GOP regains control of Congress in November.
The Hill noted Paul, a frequent critic of Fauci's, had vowed earlier this year if he becomes a committee chairman after the midterms he will go after every one of Fauci's records.
