House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that she’s more confident about the midterms for Democrats than ever before, vowing on CBS’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” that “we will win.”
Asked how she could be so sure, the California Democrat said, “We’re just walking precincts and if everyone votes, we’ll have even a bigger victory. But Democrats will carry the House. If we have a bigger victory, the Senate, governorships, it’s going to be a great night for America.”
Responding to a question about if she has seen any evidence of attempts by politicians to use less heated rhetoric, Pelosi said, “When we win, you will see evidence of that. When we do win, when we open the new Congress, we will honor the vows of our founders, e pluribus unum, from many one.”
Stressing that it is a time to heal, Pelosi said that “it’s okay to disagree in the marketplace of ideas, that’s exciting, but it is also important to find solutions that unify and not divide.”
Pelosi also said that President Donald Trump’s claim that he could do away with the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship through executive order has “no relationship to what his authority is, but that’s of course not unusual.”
She stressed that “this is what this election is about, checks and balances against this president.”
When asked about her status as the Republican Party’s designated campaign ad boogeywoman, Pelosi said, and “they come after me because I’m a very effective legislature… and they “don’t have anything to offer”
