Vice President Mike Pence defended President Donald Trump’s assertion that “unknown Middle Easterners” are among those in a migrant caravan heading towards the United States from Mexico, in an interview with The Washington Post on Tuesday.

“It’s inconceivable that there are not people of Middle Eastern descent in a crowd of more than 7,000 people advancing towards our border,” Pence said. “In the last fiscal year, we apprehended more than 10 terrorists or suspected terrorists at our southern Border from countries … other than Mexico.”

But the general statistics that Pence offered to back up the claim provided no proof that anyone in the current caravan is a Middle Easterner or a terrorist, according to the Post.

Trump made the claim, also without evidence, on Monday in a tweet, stating that “Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States. Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergency. Must change laws!”

When Trump was asked for evidence of his assertion, the president told a television reporter to “take your camera, go in the middle and search” the caravan, according to the Post.
