The Pentagon has sent Congress a legislative proposal to create a Space Force branch of the United States military at a cost of $2 billion over five years, CNN reports.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan hailed the proposal as a “historic moment for our nation,” as well as “a strategic step towards securing America’s vital national interests in space.”

He added in a statement: “Our approach follows President Trump's bold vision for space and commits resources to deliver more capability faster, ensuring the United States can compete, deter, and, if needed, win in a complex domain.”

According to an executive summary of the proposal obtained by Defense One, the Pentagon plans on spending roughly $72 million to establish a headquarters with around 200 staffers by the end of fiscal 2020, Costs could increase to around $500 per year as the Space Force gains traction. All of this is in addition to the about $10 billion spent by the Defense Department on unclassified space programs.
“Space is not just a support function. It’s a war-fighting domain. We have to be prepared to fight, deter and win,” an unnamed senior defense official told Defense One on Friday. “With these changes, we need to adapt.”

“This is a good path forward, which allows us to deliver capabilities, faster, better, and stay ahead of the adversaries,” said a second defense official.
