A Jewish doctor whose fellow Tree of Life parishioners were slaughtered by a gunman Saturday looked into the eyes of the murderer and, in lieu of evil, saw "just a guy – some mother's son" – a video that has social media buzzing.
"[Sunday], I went up to meet him, and I was just curious as to 'who is this guy?'" Dr. Jeff Cohen, the Allegheny General Hospital president, told U.K.'s Channel 4 News. "And, quite honestly, he's just a guy. People say that he's evil – he's this – he's some mother's son.
"And, how did he get from that to where he is today, that's going to be a large debate that we're going to have to wrestle with as a society."
Dr. Cohen's team, which included other Jewish doctors, was tasked with caring for the gunman who murdered 11 Jewish parishioners at the synagogue Dr. Cohen himself attends.
"He was severely injured and got great care here," Dr. Cohen said. "Many of the people that attended to him were Jewish, you know – they're heroes. They did like the cops did – they did their job. They went and confronted the problem, and they were true to their core beliefs, and I'm very proud of them. . . .
"My job isn't to judge him . . . my job is to take care of him."
Amid the hate of a murderous rampage – and hate-blaming President Donald Trump – we have found "humanity" and civility in the most surprising of places, conservatives noted on Twitter.
"Out of depravity, comes humanity," Ari Fleischer, the White House press secretary for former President George W. Bush, tweeted. "As evil as some people can be, there are more good people who do the right thing, no matter the circumstance.
"As sickening as the attack was, our nation is great, compassionate and tolerant. People like Dr. Cohen are proof."
Former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy tweeted:
"There are so many good people in this country. Just basically decent folk."
