Poll: Dems Poised to Retake House, But Wildcards Remain

A new poll shows Democrats have a good chance of retaking the House of Representatives, though there are several battleground districts that remain competitive, The Washington Post reports.

The Post and George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government polled likely voters in battleground districts, finding that the overwhelming majority of Republicans and Democrats express confidence that their party will control the House after the midterms.

In 69 districts across the country that the Post and the Cook Political Report have identified as competitive, 50 percent of likely voters say they support the Democratic candidate, and 46 percent said they support the GOP candidate.

Of those 69 districts, 63 are currently held by Republicans and 6 are held by Democrats; 48 were won by President Donald Trump in 2016 while 21 were won by his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Democrats are strongest among women, especially women who have attended college, nonwhite voters and voters under the age of 40, while Republican supporters tend to be white, male, and above the age of 40.

The poll surveyed 1,647 registered voters from October 25-28, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points.
