A majority of Democrats and left-leaning independents say the party needs to undergo significant changes or be overhauled entirely, according to a CNN poll released Sunday.
Further, the Democratic Party has its lowest favorability rating (33%) among Democrats in more than 30 years, according to the survey.
According to the poll, 58% of Democrats and independents who lean left say the party needs changes, up from 34% who said the same after the 2022 midterms. Further, 36% said their party is divided, with 32% saying they feel less a part of the party than a few years ago, according to the survey. Nearly 1 in 5 (18%) Democrats view the party unfavorably, compared to just 10% of Republicans and right-leaning independents who view the Republican Party unfavorably.
One symptom is that 36% of Democrats say their party is not doing enough to help people in the U.S., a number that exceeds the percentage of Republicans (33%) who say it about the Democratic Party, according to the poll.
Among Republicans, 58% said the Democrats try to help too many people in the U.S. who don’t deserve it, according to the survey.
Overall, 75% of Democrats say they are “disappointed” with American politics while another 55% said they are burned out, according to the survey. Just 23% say they are “fired up” or “inspired” compared to 50% of Republicans who identify as being “fired up” or "inspired."
SSRS conducted the poll for CNN from Jan. 9-12 among a random national sample of 1,205 adults. Results among the full sample have a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.2 percentage points.
