In the key swing states of Florida and Pennsylvania, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is trailing two presumed 2016 Republican presidential candidates, according to the results of a new
Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll.
In Florida, former Gov. Jeb Bush is beating Clinton by 3 percentage points, 45 percent to 42 percent, and in Pennsylvania, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is in a head-to-head match with the presumed Democratic nominee.
If the election were held today, the poll showed that Paul would receive 45 percent to Clinton’s 44 percent in the Keystone State.
In Ohio, Paul trails the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state by just 5 points, with Clinton receiving 46 percent to Paul’s 41 percent.
Clinton’s margins are down as are her favorability ratings, according to the poll.
A plurality of swing-state voters queried in the survey said that Clinton is neither honest nor trustworthy. In Florida, 50 percent of voters felt that way, compared with 49 percent in Pennsylvania and 47 percent in Ohio.
Winning Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio — known as swing states — has proven to be critical for candidates, according to the Quinnipiac poll, which notes that since 1960 no candidate has won the White House without taking at least two of those three states.
While the poll found that Clinton’s email scandal has not greatly impacted her ratings, her public image has suffered, "something for Secretary Clinton's team to worry about," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll.
"Thirty-six percent of independent voters in the key state of Ohio say they are less likely to vote for her because of the email controversy," Brown said.
Ditto for Pennsylvania, according to Quinnipiac's Tim Malloy.
"A red flag in blue state Pennsylvania. Hillary Clinton, seemingly invincible before the email scandal, ends up tied with Rand Paul," he said.
The New York Times first reported that Clinton, during her tenure as secretary of state, opted for a personal email server (housed at her New York home) and email address for all work-related correspondence.
