Former Vice President Joe Biden has a strong lead in the latest poll from Quinnipiac University following his official campaign announcement, which shows a double-digit advantage over his rivals.
Biden far outpaced Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas:
- Biden: 38 percent.
- Warren: 12 percent.
- Sanders: 11 percent.
- Buttigieg: 10 percent.
- Harris: 8 percent.
- O’Rourke: 5 percent.
No other Democratic candidate received more than two percent. These results mark a significant bump for Biden, who garnered 29 percent in a Quinnipiac survey taken at the end of March, and a drop for Sanders, who managed 19 percent in that poll, and for O’Rourke, who won 12 percent.
Most Democratic voters said they would prefer that the eventual candidate focus on national issues, while about one-in-four want a candidate that focuses on beating President Donald Trump.
"The Democratic primary race suddenly gets real with a fast start by former Vice President Joe Biden and a very clear indication from voters that he is the only candidate who can send President Trump packing 18 months from now," Tim Malloy, the assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement.
Quinnipiac polled 1,044 voters nationwide from April 26-29, with a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percentage points. For the 419 Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters that margin of error is +/- 5.6 percentage points, and for GOP and GOP-leaning voters that margin of error is +/- 5.4 percentage points.
