Fifty-six percent of the public said they oppose the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy of separating undocumented children from their parents at the border with Mexico, according to an Ipsos poll exclusively for The Daily Beast.
Just 27 percent agree with the policy aimed at discouraging others from crossing the border illegally, according to the survey released Monday.
However, 46 percent of Republicans said they support the policy while 32 percent said they did not.
Respondents were asked if they agreed with the following statement: "It is appropriate to separate undocumented immigrant parents from their children when they cross the border in order to discourage others from crossing the border illegally."
Among Democrats, only 14 percent were in favor of the policy, and 29 percent of independents supported it.
The survey of approximately 1,000 individuals was conducted June 14-15. The sample, according to Ipsos, included 339 Democrats, 335 Republicans and 204 Independents.
