YouGov Poll: Speaker Johnson Trails Biden, Harris in Favorability

By    |   Wednesday, 18 December 2024 06:41 PM EST

House Speaker Mike Johnson's favorability ratings have dropped, placing him below President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a new poll, marking a shift in public perception just weeks before his renomination as speaker of the house, Breitbart reported.

A recent poll by The Economist/YouGov reveals a decline in favorability ratings for House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.

Johnson, who gained national attention after he was elected speaker in October, now holds a 30% favorability rating, trailing behind President Joe Biden's 40% and Vice President Kamala Harris' 44%.

The survey, conducted between Dec. 15 and 17 among 1,553 U.S. adults, indicates that 36% of respondents view Johnson unfavorably, while 34% remain undecided. This marks a slight decrease in support since last month when a similar YouGov poll recorded his approval rating at 33% and disapproval at 34%.

The timing of the survey coincided with the release of a 1,547-page government spending bill negotiated by Johnson. The legislation, criticized by some conservatives for being "full of pork and disappointment," has sparked discontent among Republican voters, contributing to the Speaker's waning support.

Johnson's support among Republican voters and Trump loyalists has also dropped. In November, 55% of Republicans and 64% of Trump voters viewed Johnson favorably, compared to 18% and 16% disapproved. By December, these numbers had fallen to 47% and 56%, respectively, while disapproval among both groups increased to 24% and 22%.

This downturn comes as Johnson prepares to be officially renominated speaker of the house on Jan. 3. He will need a majority vote in the chamber to retain his position, which would require strong support from his Republican colleagues.

The December survey, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points, reflects changing dynamics within Republican ranks and the broader public.
